The process of having braces placed differs according to the type of orthodontic treatment you choose.
People choose to undergo orthodontic treatment for a range of reasons. If you would like to straighten your teeth or resolve an issue that’s bothering you, you might consider braces. But what does the process involve? And how long does it usually take? Read on to find out what to expect from the procedure and if it’s right for you…
How long does it take to get braces?
Having braces fitted typically takes between an hour or two to complete. In some cases, braces can be placed in just one appointment, but this will depend on the type of braces you choose to get, as well as the particular orthodontic concern that you are having resolved.
What does the process involve?
The process of having braces fitted does not generally cause any pain, although certain parts of the procedure may cause a sensation of pressure. If you are getting traditional metal braces, your orthodontist may need to place spacers between your teeth before your braces are applied. The process of placing spacers may be completed around a week before your braces are placed. These spacers are designed to ensure that there is adequate space for the bands to fit around the teeth.
When your orthodontist is ready to apply your braces, they will begin the process by cleaning and drying your teeth. The brackets are then attached to the teeth with a specially formulated glue. The bands are then applied around the back molars in order to anchor the braces. Although this should not cause any pain, you may experience some pressure as your orthodontist manoeuvres and adjusts the bands.
When the brackets and bands are secured in place, the arch wires are then attached to the brackets. In order to hold the wires firmly in place, your orthodontist will wrap a small rubber band around each bracket.
If you choose to get lingual braces instead of traditional metal braces, they will be placed on the back of your teeth. Although lingual braces share many of the same components as traditional braces, the process of applying them to the teeth may take longer and they can only be applied by an orthodontist who has been trained to do so.
What about clear aligners?
If you are suited to clear aligners and choose this form of orthodontic treatment rather than braces, you will need to see your orthodontist so that they can take an impression of your teeth. Your aligner trays can then be made to comfortably fit your mouth.
When your aligner trays have been fabricated, your orthodontist will check that the fit is correct and any necessary adjustments will be made. Your orthodontist will also let you know how long you should wear your aligners for every day and how long you can expect your treatment to take.
