The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis and, if left untreated, can lead to periodontitis.
One of the best ways to keep your teeth and gums in good condition is to practise proper oral hygiene daily. Without regular brushing and flossing, you will likely experience a build-up of plaque. It can lead to gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. Although gingivitis often goes unnoticed, there are a few possible warning signs worth looking out for. Read on to find more about the possible symptoms of gingivitis. Learn how you can address the issue as early as possible and prevent it from worsening over time…
What are the signs of gingivitis?
When plaque is left to build up on the teeth and gums, it can cause gum irritation and inflammation. Plaque is the most common cause of gingivitis. If your gums are inflamed because of accumulated plaque, you might notice that they feel tender and appear red and swollen. Another common warning sign of gingivitis is bleeding gums. You might notice that your gums bleed whenever you brush or floss your teeth, for example.
Receding gums, as well as teeth that appear longer than usual, are also possible signs of gingivitis. Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth may also be a warning that your gums are inflamed or infected.
In some cases, gingivitis can lead to the formation of a pocket between the teeth and gum, which increases the risk of infection as food particles can get easily trapped in this area. In the case of an infection, you may notice pus, as well as pain and discomfort.
What can you do to address the issue?
You must consult your dentist as soon as possible if you notice any possible signs of gingivitis . Let your dentist know what symptoms you have experienced so they can advise you on the best course of action. Your dentist may recommend that you have your teeth professionally cleaned to get rid of any tartar that has built up along your gum line. You should ideally see your dentist for a dental check-up and clean every six months. It will go a long way towards keeping issues like gum disease at bay.
You should also take steps to improve your oral hygiene habits — make sure that you brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss daily. You might also consider using an antibacterial mouthwash as part of your routine.
Try to stick to a balanced diet and limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks, as these tend to contribute to the build-up of plaque and the development of gum disease. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and try to brush your teeth after meals and snacks whenever possible.
