Which orthodontic treatment is best for your teenager?
Pre-adolescence and during adolescence is the best time for orthodontic treatment as the jaws are still developing.
During the teenage years and into early adulthood the jaw bone is still developing, which means an adolescent’s teeth are much easier to move as the jaw bone has not set as firmly. This is the perfect time for their teeth to be more easily straightened and shifted with orthodontic treatment. In addition, poorly positioned jaw bones can be realigned during the growth period. If left too late surgery can sometimes be required.
Get the right orthodontic treatment for your child’s circumstances
At LARA smile, we understand adolescence can be a somewhat awkward and difficult time as it is, so it is important to discuss your child’s treatment plan openly in a clear language they will understand. Together we will discuss your child’s treatment options in detail so they become part of the process and feel better about receiving orthodontics. Something which is really important to understand is that there is a significant difference in the timing of the growth development between boys and girls. This will have a bearing on the treatment and timing we recommend for your child.
Traditional braces for your teen
Braces are a traditional and very effective orthodontic treatment which has been highly developed over the past couple of decades. Our individual prescription computer-designed braces give your child a constant and efficient method for straightening their smile. Treatment time is assessed on a case-by-case basis but generally takes anywhere from 12 to 30 months.Braces can be combined with more advanced appliances for the correction of your teen’s bite, and for fashion-savvy teens, we also offer coloured bands to give their braces some personality.
Discreet treatment with clear aligners
Clear aligners are a virtually invisible treatment option, making it far less obvious you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. It involves a series of clear plastic trays which are replaced every few weeks to place consistent pressure on the teeth, gradually shifting them into the desired position. The aligners are also removable, giving your teen the ability to take them out while eating and brushing their teeth. Because they are removable, they do require the patient’s compliance to be worn for the prescribed time to ensure the desired outcome. If your child has a more severe misalignment, clear aligners may not be the best option for them as they are designed to best treat minor problems. We will be able to advise on the best treatment course for your child’s unique circumstances.
Teen Orthodontics at LARA smile
If your child suffers from a crooked or misaligned smile or bites it is important to have this corrected as soon as possible as poorly positioned teeth may be linked to oral breathing and can lead to other issues such as poor facial growth, gum problems and tooth decay. As every person is different and has their own unique set of circumstances, it’s also important to remember that there is no one size fits all approach when it comes to orthodontics; we can ensure that your child receives the right treatment the first time to ensure the best outcome possible.
