Dr Charlie Kahwagi will provide you with an individual post-operative care plan following dental implant surgery.
The recovery period between the insertion of your dental implant and the placement of your abutment is the most important stage of the implant process. The period of osseointegration will determine whether your implant is successful or not. If you have any concerns during this period, it is vital to contact Dr Charlie Kahwagi as soon as possible.
Immediately following surgery
After your initial surgery and once your implants have been inserted, you will be given a gauze pad to bite down on to stop the bleeding. Continue to use the gauze pads, changing them regularly until the bleeding has stopped. Antibiotics and antibiotic mouthwash will be prescribed to ensure the site of the implant remains free of any foreign contaminants and infection. Painkillers may also be prescribed to alleviate ongoing pain.
Recovery following surgery
In the days following surgery, you will be given an ice pack. You will be encouraged to apply it to the treated area for approximately twenty minutes every hour following surgery. Where you can, keep your head elevated for at least twenty-four hours after surgery. Avoid partaking in exercise or any strenuous activities for three days following surgery.
Ongoing care and maintenance
In the days and weeks following your initial surgery, you will be asked to rinse your mouth with saltwater (one teaspoon of salt in one cup of water) four times a day to prevent infections.
Brushing and flossing should be maintained two times a day, being cautious of the implant site. You must remain in contact with Dr Kahwagi to prevent any further oral health problems.
